Medicare Open Enrollment in The Villages, FL

Medicare open enrollment in The Villages, FL is the window where almost anyone on Medicare can switch plans, no qualifying event needed. It runs October 15 through December 7, and whatever you pick takes effect January 1.

It's also mailbox and TV ad season. Skip the noise. Pull up your actual doctor list and prescriptions and make one clear-headed decision instead of reacting to a commercial.

  • October 15 through December 7, every year
  • Any plan change starts January 1
  • Check your drug list and your local network first
  • Free reviews for residents of Sumter, Lake and Marion County

What's allowed

Changes you can make during open enrollment

  • Move from Original Medicare into a Medicare Advantage plan
  • Drop a Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare
  • Swap one Medicare Advantage plan for another
  • Join, cancel, or change a stand-alone Part D drug plan

Medigap works on a different clock

Medicare Supplement plans sit outside open enrollment. Floridians can apply for a Medigap plan at any point, but once your personal enrollment window closes, the carrier can ask health questions.

Get ready

A focused check beats an endless comparison

  1. 1

Open the Annual Notice of Change

Your current plan mails this letter every September. Next year's premium, copays, drug tiers and network shifts are all in there.

  2. 2

    Refresh your prescription list

Doses change and new drugs get added over a year. Bring the current version, since this usually drives the biggest swing in your total cost.

  3. 3

    Recheck your doctors and hospital

Confirm UF Health The Villages Hospital, AdventHealth Waterman or your primary care clinic against next year's provider directory, not this year's.

  4. 4

    Decide well before December 7

The deadline is fixed. Applications filed in the last few days leave zero room to correct a mistake.

Other windows

If you miss December 7

Advantage members in Sumter County get a second shot from January 1 through March 31, good for one switch, either to another Advantage plan or back to Original Medicare plus a Part D plan. Beyond that, you'd need a Special Enrollment Period tied to a qualifying event, like moving out of your plan's service area or losing employer coverage.

Brand new to Medicare? Your Initial Enrollment Period around turning 65 applies instead. If you're unsure which window fits your situation, read about switching your plan.
